Bean and Davey honoured for keeping standards high
By Tim O’Connell

Dedication to maintaining the quality of our buildings and infrastructure has seen two Porirua City men rewarded by their peers. Wellingtonians who have helped Kiwis to enjoy a safer environment at work and home have been recognised in Standards New Zealand’s annual celebration of excellence. Among the six recipients of the 2008 Meritorious Service Award were local men Brian Davey and Richard Bean from Pukerua Bay and Porirua respectively. Mr Bean has over 30 years’ experience in traffic engineering, research and road safety policy development with the NZTA and its predecessors. Mr Davey has enjoyed a 35 year rise through the ranks of the New Zealand Fire Service to become National Manager of Operational Standards, which focuses on promoting safe fire fighting procedures. Both men were recognised by Standards New Zealand at a special awards breakfast in Wellington recently, with Minister of Commerce Simon Power in attendance as guest speaker. In acknowledging the efforts of the award recipients as well as the 2000-plus members of various Standards New Zealand committees, Mr Power reinforced the importance of the excellent work undertaken by all who contribute to standards development. Chairman of the Standards Council Richard Westlake praised Mr Bean and Mr Davey for their outstanding work, as well as the other recipients of Meritorious Service from around the country. “These individuals have shown true dedication, and their exceptional, and voluntary, hard work, has enabled us to continue our role of producing high quality Standards that assist New Zealanders in their lives.” Standards New Zealand is the peak national body which provides information, establishes measurements and sets quality and safety levels for areas in both private and public sectors. The organisation was established in 1932 in the wake of the devastating Napier earthquake as a way of ensuring such events in the future would not result in a similar loss of life.
